About the Book

 Book “More sweat was drawn with the writing of the book than with the birth of a child”, said Dr Wim Nell, when describing the writing of the new book Strategic Approach to Farming Success which is taking agriculture by storm.
One of the main purposes of the book is to develop and foster a management style in the farming industry through proactive management and empowering labourers to move from being workers or producers to product managers. In Section A the farmer/management team is introduced to the concepts strategic thinking, planning and management. The reader is also introduced to the model developed by the authors, namely the journey to farming success. In Section B each of the eleven stages in the journey to farming success is discussed separately. The book is divided into two sections: Section A is a short introduction to the strategic approach in agricultural management, and Section B is about the construction of the strategic plan in 11 stages. The book is written in such a way that the farmer/management team develops a strategic plan as he/she works through the book. It is therefore a step-by-step approach, with exercises at the end of each section or stage of the journey to farming success. Each exercise is planned in such a way that it assists the reader to develop a strategic plan as he/she progresses through the book. Examples of possible answers on the different questions in each exercise are given to assist readers in compiling their own strategic plan.

The steps (or stages) in the strategic management model include the principles identified by the authors as a result of seven years of lecturing to graduate and postgraduate students in strategic agricultural management, as well as doing consultation work for a large number of farmers (nationally and internationally) and other people involved in agriculture who attended three-day courses in strategic agriculture planning and management.
This book is designed to assist the farmer/management team in thinking strategically and imaginatively about the future of the farming business, in developing generative relationships with other farmers or agricultural institutions and continue in organising and reorganising the farming business.
